Q: When should I arrive for my
audition and what should I bring?
A: Arrive 15 minutes before your audition to check
in. Bring a water bottle, your $15 audition fee, and one small photo
that we can keep.
Q: How long will my audition last?
A: Each audition lasts approximately 10-15 minutes,
but plan for 30 minutes from the time you arrive.
Q: Who will listen to my audition?
A: There will be one or more PGC choral directors
present at each audition.
Q: What happens during the audition?
A: Depending on your age, you may be asked to:
– Sing ascending and descending scales on syllables
(do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do or la-la-la) to determine your vocal
range
– Echo sing tonal patterns played on the piano (sing what you hear)
– Sing Row, Row, Row Your Boat first alone, and then as
a round with one of the directors
– Sing the highest or lowest sound when two notes are played on
the piano (highest, middle or lowest note heard when three notes are
played together for grades 5 and up)
– Sing America the Beautiful a capella from memory:
(only grades 5-9). A PDF file of the music is available for
downloading on this
page. Girls going into grades 10-12 will sing a song of their
choosing.
– Sight read a simple piece of music, beginning with grade 7
Q: What will the directors look
for in my audition?
A: They will look for:
– A pleasant choral singing voice, one that has the ability to
blend with other voices
– The ability to sing in tune
– The ability to correctly sing the musical patterns
– The ability to vocally identify the highest, lowest, and
sometimes the middle note in a three-note chord or when two notes are
played for girls in grades 3-4.
– The ability to hold your own part while singing a round
– The ability to stay focused and follow directions
– An expressive singing face
Q: Is it necessary to be able to
read music?
A: It depends on the choir level. For the
introductory choir it is not expected. For the intermediate choir, it
is very helpful. It becomes extremely important to be able to read
music at the Concert Choir level. However, if the vocal talent
is present, we can discuss ways to develop the musicianship skills
necessary to succeed in the choir.
Q: What does my parent do while I
am auditioning?
A: Your parent will wait with an audition volunteer
who will explain the program, the commitment involved, and answer
questions.
Q: How will I know the result of
my audition?
A: Audition results will be mailed in mid-May.
