The Semi-Tones (ST) is the intermediate training ensemble of the
Princeton Girlchoir. In the Semi-Tones, girls develop healthy vocal
production through the study of proper breathing technique and singing
with open space and relaxed tone. Significant time is also spent
studying basic music theory, Solfege as a means to improve
sight-reading skills, the International Phonetic Alphabet as it
applies to choral diction, and ensemble technique. Choristers apply
this knowledge through the learning of a culturally diverse
repertoire. The choristers progress from one choir to another based on
their personal musical development.
In addition to studying fundamentals, the Semi-Tones choir is a place
where choristers begin to discover, understand, and express their
innate musicality. Choristers are challenged to explore and connect to
the emotional content of the repertoire and effectively communicate
mood and message through song.
Time commitment expectations for all Semi-Tone choristers include:
-
90-minute weekly rehearsals on Tuesdays (6:00 pm - 7:30 pm) at
Princeton Day School
-
Saturday afternoon "sing-ins" and workshops (generally 2-3 per year)
-
pre-concert rehearsals
-
winter and spring concerts
Additional performance opportunities often arise during the
year. Participation will always be encouraged but not necessarily
required.
